Drawings!
Like many animators, I started my love of animation with a love of drawing. Growing up, there was rarely a time when you'd find me without some sort of drawing medium. From drawing with pencil and pen, to paints, linoleum prints, and digital drawings I constantly found myself creating. These are a few of my favorites.
100 Hands
I once had a teacher tell me that my weakest point in my drawings were my hands. So, they challenged me to draw 100 hands before the end of the quarter. With every drawing I could see the improvement. I slowly understood how each part of the hand connected to the other ended the quarter with a better understanding of the hand.
C is for Coati
In my design class our teacher challenged us to create an anamorph of the first letter of our names. One of the most fun parts of the challenge was not only coming up with clear silhouettes of the letters, but also making sure that the contrast between each element was clear enough to see. As we were only allowed to use black and white I used my knowledge in wood carvings to create shape languages to differentiate the values.
Dream Library
I'd like to think in some universe there is a library where all dreams from anyone is stored and reused. In this piece I was challenged to make an imaginary space feel real. I really enjoyed using the technical way of using a grid to make a space come to life.
Birds of a Cliff
Around 2019 I became a bit obsessed with using Linoleum and Wood as a medium to give my art texture and depth. The challenge was that you only have 2 colors to work with. Creating a texture language was key to show the viewer what was bird and what was rock.
The Garden
Similar to the Dream Library, we were tasked to create a space using not only our imagination but the technical way of using a perspective grid. My favorite part was adding all the little details to the columns.
Paper Bags Still Life
The concept of using paper bags for the subject of this still life was to play with light and using charcoals.
The Cove
Using wood, similarly to linoleum, I wanted to see if I could capture the texture of water by using different stokes.
Charles Bargue French Bust Study
During Covid drawing was something that I constantly did to pass the time. I did a few studies of different artists to understand how to use shadow in the human form. Charles Bargue French was one of the artists that I took inspiration from.
Pots and Boxes Still Life
In this still life I had the challenge of showing the different materials while using pastels. Between the matt in one vase and the shine in the others I practiced forcing the highlights to make material shine.
The Girl in Blue
One of the mediums I practiced was gouache. Studying color theory, I practiced used a monochromatic pallet to paint the profile of a woman.
Tiger Eye
Another texture I wanted to play with was fur. Using smaller strokes and how far or close together I was able to change the values to make the lights and shadows. By doing this I was also able to show the color distinction in the fur.
Charles Bargue French
Back Study
Another one of the studies I did from Charles Bargue was of this torso. He had a preliminary sketch that helped show the distinct shape of the shadow and how simple is better.
